On Monday April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America. A total solar eclipse is a phenomenon that occurs when the moon completely covers the face of the sun, resulting in what looks like a black orb with a bright ring around it. The total solar eclipse on April 8 will last almost four minutes, beginning over the South Pacific Ocean, with the west coast of Mexico being the first location in continental North America to experience it, around 11:07 am Pacific Time.

A total solar eclipse is a unique occurrence to behold, and Aira is thrilled to be part of an exciting event on April 8 that will expand access to this celestial event for those who are blind or have low vision. Total Eclipse of the Park is an event taking place on April 8 in Rochester, New York, at Genesee Valley Park. Organized by the South East Area Coalition in collaboration with the Tool Shed, the event is designed to make this special event accessible to everyone. Aira is partnering with the event organizers and our professional visual interpreters will be providing live description, streamed via our YouTube channel.

Our visual interpreters will offer detailed descriptions of the eclipse, adding insights on the appearance of the sky as the eclipse progresses, what the sun looks like during total moon coverage, and describing the atmosphere at the park and reactions of attendees. We believe this is a fantastic use of Aira’s visual interpretation to foster a sense of community for everyone looking to experience the eclipse.

The in-person event runs from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm Eastern Time, and showcases a wide range of inclusive activities, such as beep baseball, accessible cornhole, audio darts, and a short program designed to accommodate all eclipse attendees. Can’t come to Rochester? Aira’s live stream on YouTube will run from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Eastern time.

How can I live stream the event?

From 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Eastern Time, Aira will be live streaming the eclipse on our YouTube channel. If you subscribe to the channel ahead of time, you will receive a notification when the live stream begins. The live stream is entirely free.
